We made the drive towards Asheville... checking our "Sprint" phones along the way. Couldn't find anywhere there was a signal. About 15 miles from North Carolina we finally saw Blue sky again... and mountains. Just before we reached the Turn off from I-26 to I-40, we stopped at a great Flea Market. Kathleen is checking out some of the old bottles and cans with labels that were the early forms of marketing.

We decided to head towards Cherokee. We were getting hungry and started to look for a good place to eat. We came upon this place that looks like a thousand other little country restaurants. But this one was called "Granny's Chicken Palace", and the place was mobbed, with a bunch of people out on the porch, waiting to be seated. As soon as we got out of the car and got a whiff of the smell of their chicken cooking, we knew why. This place was great!!! The best Southern fried chicken I have had since the covered wagon days when my parents used to drive us all down to Florida once or twice a year. We used to stop at the dumpiest little cafes that made the most amazing tasting chicken. Granny has that recipe, along with one for fantastic cole slaw and a little taste treat they just call "puffs". These are little, tenderly fried puffs of some type of corn meal, that come to the table dipped in powdered sugar. We couldn't resist just trying them. The hard part was leaving the rest of them in the basket!

Along the drive we came across this place that sells apples and nuts... and mountain land! Also a shot of the Color we saw on our drive to Gatlinburg.
